Us-Magnetic Field
This picture is a false color image of the transparent, electrified gas (plasma) trapped inside Earths magnetic field taken by NASAs Imager for Magnetopause to Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) spacecraft on 11 August, 2000. The IMAGE spacecraft is looking down at the Earth from above the north pole, and the globe or sphere in the center represents the position and size of the Earth. The image (top) is the ultraviolet glow from relatively cold plasma as seen by the Extreme Ultraviolet imager (EUV) instrument on board IMAGE. A hook-shaped " tail" of plasma streaming toward the Sun can be seen at the top left of the picture. Note also the small, faint circle near the center of the image - this is the ultraviolet glow from the aurora, also known as the northern lights. AFP PHOTO/NASA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Earth's magnetic field, as captured by NASA's Imager for Magnetopause to Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) spacecraft on 11 August, 2000. The false color image reveals the transparent, electrified gas known as plasma that is trapped within our planet's protective shield. From its vantage point above the north pole, the IMAGE spacecraft offers a unique perspective of our home. In this top-down view, we see a sphere representing Earth at the center while an array of vibrant colors illuminates the scene. The ultraviolet glow emitted by relatively cold plasma dominates the image and is captured by the Extreme Ultraviolet imager (EUV) instrument onboard IMAGE. One cannot miss noticing a remarkable hook-shaped "tail" of plasma streaming towards the Sun in the top left corner. However, it is impossible to overlook one of nature's most enchanting phenomena - aurora borealis or northern lights - represented by a small and faint circle near the center of this stunning picture. This ethereal display adds an extra touch of magic to an already awe-inspiring visual spectacle. AFP PHOTO/NASA has expertly preserved this extraordinary moment in time through their high-quality square format print. As you gaze upon this photograph, let your imagination soar beyond boundaries and appreciate both Earth's delicate equilibrium and its ability to create such breathtaking wonders within our vast universe.
