Subadar Khudadad Khan VC (1888-1971)
Khudadad Khan was the first Indian to win the Victoria Cross after eligibility for the award was extended in 1911 to Indian officers and men of the Indian Army. In common with half of the men in his regiment, the 129th Duke of Connaughts Own Baluchis, Khudadad Khan was a Pathan from north-west India.
As part of 7th Indian (Ferozepore) Brigade, the 129th Baluchis arrived in France from Egypt during September 1914. While serving in the regiments machine-gun detachment on 31 October 1914, at Hollebecke, Belgium, the British officer in charge of the detachment having been wounded, and the other gun put out of action by a shell, Sepoy Khudadad, though himself wounded, remained working his gun until all the other five men of the gun detachment had been killed. (London Gazette, 7 December 1914).

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print showcases Subadar Khudadad Khan VC, a brave soldier from the 10th Baluch Regiment during the period of 1914-1935. Painted by Charles Bevan, this oil on canvas artwork is currently housed in the National Army Museum in London. Subadar Khudadad Khan VC (1888-1971) holds a significant place in history as he was the first Indian to be awarded the Victoria Cross after its eligibility was extended to Indian officers and soldiers of the Indian Army in 1911. Hailing from north-west India, Khan belonged to the Pathan community. During World War One, specifically on October 31st, 1914, at Hollebecke in Belgium, Khudadad Khan displayed immense bravery while serving with his regiment's machine-gun detachment. Despite being wounded himself and witnessing his comrades fall one by one due to enemy fire, he valiantly continued operating his gun until all five other members of his detachment were killed. For this extraordinary act of courage and selflessness, Sepoy Khudadad was bestowed with the Victoria Cross by King George V himself in January 1915. This prestigious honor recognized not only his personal heroism but also symbolized the valor exhibited by countless Indian soldiers who fought alongside their British counterparts during World War One. This print serves as a powerful reminder of Subadar Khudadad Khan's remarkable story and pays tribute to all those who served bravely on both sides during that tumultuous time in history.
