Coloured aquatint by J Harris after H Martens, published by Rudolph Ackermann, 1 January 1848.
In the final battle of the 1st Sikh War (1845-1846) Lieutenant-General Sir Hugh Gough engaged the main Sikh force at Sobraon on 10 February 1846. The Sikhs occupied an entrenched position, and British and Indian troops advanced under murderous Sikh artillery fire. This print depicts the 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment of Foot and the 50th (Queens Own) Regiment of Foot advancing. The Sikhs fought with their backs to the River Sutlej, refusing to surrender. In consequence, casualties on both sides were again severe. British losses were over 2, 000, Sikh losses perhaps as many as 10, 000./); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Battle of Sobraon 10 February 1846" a significant event during the 1st Sikh War. The aquatint, colored by Martens and reproduced by J Harris after H Martens, was published in January 1848 by Rudolph Ackermann. In this final battle of the war, Lieutenant-General Sir Hugh Gough led British and Indian troops against the main Sikh force at Sobraon on February 10th, 1846. The Sikhs held an entrenched position and unleashed a devastating artillery fire upon their advancing enemies. This print specifically depicts the valiant efforts of the 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment of Foot and the 50th (Queens Own) Regiment of Foot as they bravely pushed forward. With their backs against the River Sutlej, the Sikhs refused to surrender despite facing overwhelming odds. As a result, both sides suffered heavy casualties with over 2,000 British losses and potentially up to 10,000 Sikh losses. This historical artwork provides a vivid glimpse into this intense battle scene that played a crucial role in shaping history. Preserved at London's National Army Museum, it serves as a testament to bravery and sacrifice exhibited by soldiers from different backgrounds who fought for their respective causes during this tumultuous period in India's past.
