5929310 The Battle of Goojerat, 21 February 1849 (aquatint, coloured) by Martens, Henry (fl.1825-60) (after); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: The Battle of Goojerat on 21 February 1849.
Coloured aquatint by J Harris after H Martens, published by Rudolph Ackermann, 29 July 1850.
The final action of the 2nd Sikh War was fought at Gujerat, about 120 km. north of Lahore, on 21 February 1849. Sir Hugh Gough assembled an army of some 24, 000 with which to attack a Sikh force estimated at 60, 000. After an artillery duel lasting some two and a half hours, Gough ordered his infantry forward in a general advance. Although Sikh resistance was fierce, they were eventually forced to give ground, and the retreat soon became a rout. On 14 March, the remains of the Sikh army surrendered at Rawalpindi. The Punjab was annexed to British India, and the Sikh state lost its independence.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

The Battle of Goojerat, 21 February 1849

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating aquatint print that captures the intensity and drama of this historic event. Created by Henry Martens and colored by J Harris, this artwork offers a vivid depiction of the final action in the 2nd Sikh War. Taking place at Gujerat, just north of Lahore, on that fateful day in February 1849, Sir Hugh Gough led an army of approximately 24,000 soldiers against a formidable Sikh force estimated at 60,000. The battle commenced with a fierce artillery duel lasting over two hours before Gough ordered his infantry to advance. The print showcases the bravery and determination exhibited by both sides during this intense conflict. Despite facing strong resistance from the Sikhs, Gough's forces eventually gained ground and forced their opponents into retreat. What began as a strategic maneuver soon turned into an overwhelming rout for the Sikh army. On March 14th, just weeks after this decisive victory at Goojerat, the remnants of the Sikh forces surrendered at Rawalpindi. This marked not only their defeat but also signified the end of their independence as British India annexed Punjab. This historical artwork serves as a powerful reminder of significant events that shaped nations and altered destinies forever. It stands as a testament to courage in battle while offering viewers an opportunity to reflect upon moments that have defined our shared history.
