EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the powerful presence of Augustus, the Roman Emperor who reigned during a significant period in ancient history. Created by Aegidius Sadeler II, a renowned artist of the 16th and 17th centuries, this engraving beautifully portrays Augustus as a distinguished ruler. Augustus, originally known as Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, rose to prominence after the death of his great-uncle Julius Caesar. As one of three rulers in a triumvirate, he eventually emerged as the sole leader after defeating Mark Anthony at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. Proclaiming himself Emperor in 27 BC with the title Caesar Augustus, he ushered in an era marked by peace and prosperity for Rome. During his reign that lasted until 14 AD, Augustus brought an end to civil strife that had plagued Rome for over a century. Under his rule, Rome reached its pinnacle of imperial power and became synonymous with grandeur and influence. In this portrait-like depiction captured by Sadeler's skilled hand, we see Augustus exuding authority and regality. His gaze is intense yet composed; it reflects both strength and wisdom acquired through years of leadership. As we admire this historical artifact from Heritage Images' Historica Graphica Collection, let us appreciate not only its artistic value but also recognize how Augustus shaped one of history's most influential empires – leaving behind a legacy that continues to captivate our imagination today.
