EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic figure of Edward V, a young king whose reign was tragically cut short. Created in 1830 by an unknown artist, this portrait captures the essence of Edward V's brief but significant time on the throne. Edward V ascended to power at a tender age after his father's passing, inheriting the titles of King of England and Lord of Ireland. However, fate had other plans for him as his uncle, the Duke of Gloucester, seized control as Lord Protector and ultimately deposed Edward V to become Richard III. Dressed in regal attire with an elegant cloak adorned with ermine fur, Edward V exudes both innocence and authority. His youthful face is captured with remarkable detail and sensitivity by Alfred Howard in this engraving from "Biographical Illustrations". The image not only portrays a child king caught amidst political turmoil but also serves as a poignant reminder of the House of York's tumultuous history during the fifteenth century. The absence of a crown symbolizes both his unrealized potential and untimely downfall. This historical photograph offers us a glimpse into one person's journey through power and adversity. It invites contemplation about what might have been if circumstances had allowed Edward V to fulfill his destiny as King of England.
