EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the final meeting of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in the United States on August 21,1958. The significant event took place during a pivotal moment in American history, following the launch of the Soviet Union's Sputnik satellites in late 1957. In response to this technological advancement by their Cold War rival, the United States decided to reorganize its civil space efforts. On July 29,1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Public Law 85-568, establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This historic decision led to T. Keith Glennan being sworn in as NASA's first Administrator on August 19th that same year. The photograph showcases three key figures involved in this transition: T. Keith Glennan himself; Mr. Preston R. Bassett, a member of NACA's Committee on Aerodynamics; and Mr. Charles J. McCarthy, Chairman of Chance Vought Aircraft Inc. With October 1st serving as the official effective date for NASA's establishment, NACA was absorbed into this new agency alongside various other government space research organizations. This image not only represents an important turning point in American space exploration but also highlights the determination and collaboration required to propel humanity further into unknown territories beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
