The Great Hall, Bisham Abbey, Berkshire, 1924-1926. Artist: HN King
The Great Hall, Bisham Abbey, Berkshire, 1924-1926. Founded in the 13th century as a Preceptory of the Knights Templar, Bisham Abbey was later a Benedictine abbey. The appearance of the house owes much to Sir Philip Hoby (died 1558) who gained the estate after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Today it is the site of a National Sports Centre. A print from Hutchinsons Britain Beautiful, edited by Walter Hutchinson, volume I, 1924-1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Great Hall, Bisham Abbey, Berkshire, 1924-1926. This print transports us back to the grandeur of the 16th century. The Great Hall stands proudly within Bisham Abbey, a site with a rich history dating back to its founding as a Preceptory of the Knights Templar in the 13th century. The architectural beauty of this stately home is evident in every detail captured by artist HN King. The tapestries adorning the walls tell stories of times long past, while the Tudor fireplace exudes warmth and elegance. A couch invites visitors to relax and soak in the atmosphere of this remarkable interior. Bisham Abbey owes much of its current appearance to Sir Philip Hoby, who acquired it after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in England. Today, it serves as a National Sports Centre but remains steeped in religious significance due to its monastic origins. This print from Hutchinsons Britain Beautiful showcases not only an exquisite building but also captures a moment frozen in time during the vibrant twenties era. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and character to this image, allowing us to appreciate both its historical context and artistic composition. HN King's skillful portrayal brings together elements that make Bisham Abbey truly unique - its country house charm combined with centuries-old religious heritage. As we gaze upon this photograph print, we are transported into an enchanting world where past meets present.
