A group of Buddhist monks in the datsan, 1880.
From a collection of 71 items (photographs and negatives on glass) made in the late 19th century and early 20th century by the famous revolutionary-populist and social and political activist N.A. Charushin (1851-1937) and by N. Petrov. Charushin began serving a hard labor sentence in the Transbaikal Territory in 1878. The collection illustrates aspects of Transbaikal history in this period, with a particular emphasis on the tea trade with China, which at that time was one of the main branches of the economy of the region. The photographs show various technological processes of growing and preparing tea, sections of trade routes, as well as views of China, Mongolia, Buryatia, and various towns and villages of Transbaikal, as well as images of local people of different ethnicities and nationalities. Several of the photographs, including one of the large and imposing Russian consulate, were taken in Urga, at that time the capital of Outer Mongolia (and known today as Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, captured by Nikolai Nikolaevich Petrov in 1880, depicts a group of Buddhist monks in the datsan, or monastery, of Transbaikal Russia. The datsan, a significant religious and cultural center for the Buryat people, is nestled amidst the verdant landscape, with the monks clad in their traditional robes, deep in meditation and prayer. The serene atmosphere is a stark contrast to the political and economic turmoil of the late 19th century, during which Transbaikal Russia was undergoing rapid modernization and expansion. Nikolai Nikolaevich Petrov's photograph is part of a collection of 71 items, including photographs and negatives on glass, made by the revolutionary-populist and social and political activist N.A. Charushin and Petrov between the late 19th century and early 20th century. Charushin, who began serving a hard labor sentence in the Transbaikal Territory in 1878, documented various aspects of Transbaikal history during this period, with a particular emphasis on the tea trade with China, which was a major economic force in the region. The photographs in the collection illustrate the technological processes of growing and preparing tea, sections of trade routes, and views of China, Mongolia, Buryatia, and various towns and villages of Transbaikal, as well as images of local people of different ethnicities and nationalities. This photograph, taken in Urga, the capital of Outer Mongolia at the time, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region and the lives of its people. The imposing Russian consulate in the background is a reminder of the complex political dynamics at play, as Russia sought to assert its influence in the region while respecting the religious and cultural traditions of its inhabitants.
