Leaf from a Book of Hours: Text (verso), c. 1410-20. Creator: Boethius Illuminator (Flemish
Leaf from a Book of Hours: Text (verso), c. 1410-20. This finely preserved leaf with its large miniature is stylistically consistent with the work of the Boethius Illuminator. An unusual and very original painter, he was named after a manuscript copy of the works of the Roman philosopher Boethius (AD 480-524), which he illuminated in 1414. The artist favored bright, sweeping colours and expressionistic compositions. He used tessellated (mosaic-patterned) grounds in his miniatures, as is the case here. The Boethius Illuminator and his assistants participated in the illustration of over a dozen manuscripts between 1414 and 1418/20. It was not unusual for artists working in different styles to collaborate on a single book of hours during the 1400s and 1500s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautifully preserved leaf from a Book of Hours showcases the exquisite talent of the Boethius Illuminator, a Flemish artist active during the 15th century. Known for his unique style and originality, this particular leaf bears resemblance to his other works. The artist derived his name from an illuminated manuscript of the Roman philosopher Boethius' writings, which he adorned with intricate illustrations in 1414. The Boethius Illuminator's artistic preferences are evident in this piece as well - vibrant colors and expressive compositions dominate the scene. Notably, he often incorporated tessellated grounds into his miniatures, as seen here. This mosaic-like pattern adds depth and visual interest to the artwork. Collaboration among artists with different styles was not uncommon during the 1400s and 1500s when creating books of hours. The Boethius Illuminator and his assistants were involved in illustrating numerous manuscripts between 1414 and 1418/20. Executed using ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, this leaf exemplifies exceptional craftsmanship that has stood the test of time. It is currently housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art in Paris. This print by Heritage Art captures every intricate detail of this remarkable piece by the renowned Boethius Illuminator. It serves as a testament to both historical significance and artistic brilliance within medieval manuscript illumination.
