Whaleback Clouds Over Mount Erebus, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
Whaleback Clouds Over Mount Erebus, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Whaleback Clouds Over Mount Erebus" captures the breathtaking beauty of the Antarctic landscape during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition. Taken by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting, this image is a testament to both the scientific and exploratory ambitions of the Terra Nova Expedition. Scott's team, consisting of experts in various fields, embarked on their journey in 1910 with hopes of conducting groundbreaking research while also aiming to be the first to reach the South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, they were met with disappointment as Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already achieved this feat a month earlier. Despite facing harsh blizzards and dwindling supplies, Scott and his remaining team members pressed forward. Tragically, they succumbed to these treacherous conditions at the end of March that year. It was not until eight months later that their bodies and diaries were discovered. This particular photograph showcases an ethereal scene where whaleback clouds gracefully hover over Mount Erebus – a stunning juxtaposition between nature's magnificence and human endeavor. As part of Scott's Last Expedition documentation published in Volume I by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913, it serves as a poignant reminder of both triumphs and sacrifices made during one of history's most significant polar expeditions.
