Graythorp, Hartlepool. A general view of progress at Graythorp, showing a 509 Revolver crane in the process of being constructed.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. By 1972, one thousand men were working on site to build a tubular structure which would support a drilling rig in the North Sea destined for the Forties Oilfield

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of marine engineering. The image showcases the Graythorp fabrication yard in Hartlepool, where a 509 Revolver crane is being meticulously constructed. In the early 1970s, Laing Pipelines Offshore embarked on an ambitious project to transform the site of the old William Gray Shipyard into a state-of-the-art facility for offshore construction. The company's vision was realized with the creation of a dry dock that would play a crucial role in building fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's groundbreaking North Sea Oil Project. The scale of this endeavor becomes apparent when considering that by 1972, one thousand skilled workers were employed at Graythorp. Their collective efforts focused on constructing a robust tubular structure capable of supporting an entire drilling rig destined for the Forties Oilfield. This photograph not only showcases the impressive progress made at Graythorp but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. It symbolizes how innovation and expertise can shape our world, enabling us to conquer new frontiers such as offshore oil exploration.
