EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Common Milkweed, Asclepias syriaca, from Antoine Jussieu's Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was created by the renowned French botanical illustrator, Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), with engraving by Devegni and direction by Turpin himself. Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and lifelike representations of plants. The Common Milkweed, also known as Asclepias syriaca, is a native plant of North America and is a member of the dogbane family. The plant is easily identified by its large, velvety leaves and clusters of fragrant, pink or purple flowers. The milkweed derives its common name from the milky sap that exudes from the stems and leaves when they are cut or bruised. This sap contains latex, which is toxic to many insects but provides food for the monarch butterfly larvae, making milkweed an essential plant in their life cycle. The copperplate stipple engraving technique used in this illustration involves the application of ink to the surface of a copper plate using a stylus, creating a textured effect. The hand-coloring adds an additional layer of detail and realism to the image, making it a beautiful and accurate representation of the Common Milkweed. This historical illustration is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of the time and serves as an important record of natural history.
