The Iroquois, also known as the Haudenosaunee or the Six Nations, are a Native American confederacy composed of six tribes: Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora. At the time this photograph was taken, in 1862, the Iroquois had a long and complex history. They were once a powerful military force, known for their formidable warriors and strategic alliances. The Iroquois Confederacy was formed around 1450, and its members lived in what is now upstate New York and southern Ontario. They were skilled hunters, farmers, and craftspeople, and their society was based on a matriarchal system, with women holding significant political power. Despite their strength and resilience, the Iroquois were not immune to the forces of European colonization. They were subjected to disease, warfare, and displacement, and their lands were taken by European settlers.
