A pioneering figure in Italian literature, Svevo is best known for his innovative approach to the psychological novel. Born in Trieste, a city straddling the Austro-Hungarian and Italian borders, Svevo's multicultural upbringing influenced his unique literary perspective. He began his career as a businessman, but a chance encounter with James Joyce in 1907 led him to abandon commerce in favor of writing. Svevo's most famous work, "Zeno's Conscience," was published in 1923, when he was in his sixties. The novel, which explores the inner workings of its protagonist's mind, is considered a seminal work in the development of the psychological novel in Italy. Svevo's other notable works include "The Confessions of Zeno" and "The Non-Existent Knight." Despite his late start in literature, Svevo's impact on Italian literature was significant. His innovative use of stream-of-consciousness narrative techniques and exploration of the human psyche paved the way for future Italian writers, including Alberto Moravia and Elio Vassallo.
