EDITORS COMMENTS
Joseph Francois Foullon: A Tragic Figure of the French Revolution This haunting image depicts Joseph Francois Foullon, an unpopular statesman who became a tragic figure of the French Revolution. Born in 1717, Foullon rose through the ranks of French politics, serving as Intendant of Finance under King Louis XV. However, his tenure was marked by unpopular economic policies, including heavy taxes and austerity measures, which earned him the enmity of the Parisian populace. As tensions mounted in the late 1780s, Foullon attempted to flee the country, but was intercepted by the National Guard and brought before the revolutionary authorities. Despite the efforts of the Marquis de Lafayette to intervene on his behalf, Foullon was sentenced to death by the Paris mob. The date of Foullon's execution is not definitively known, but it is believed to have occurred shortly after the fall of the Bastille on July 14, 1789. In this chilling image, Foullon is shown being hanged from a streetlamp, a grim reminder of the violent consequences of political unpopularity during the tumultuous years of the French Revolution. Despite his controversial legacy, Foullon's story is an important chapter in the history of the French Revolution, highlighting the volatile nature of political power and the power of the people to demand change. This image, from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a poignant glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of revolution and upheaval.
