Justus Jonas (1493-1555): A Pivotal Figure in the German Reformation This evocative photograph print captures the stern yet thoughtful visage of Justus Jonas, a German Protestant divine and reformer, who played a significant role in the religious and political upheavals of the 16th century. Born in Nuremberg, Jonas studied at the University of Wittenberg under the renowned reformer, Martin Luther. He became an ardent supporter of the Protestant cause and was instrumental in the spread of Lutheranism in Germany. Jonas is best known for his role in the Marburg Colloquy of 1529, where he helped facilitate a meeting between Luther and the Swiss reformer, Ulrich Zwingli, in an attempt to unite the Protestant movement. Although the two leaders were unable to reach a complete agreement, the Colloquy marked an important step towards Protestant unity. Despite his efforts towards Protestant unity, Jonas faced considerable opposition from both Catholic and Protestant forces. He was excommunicated by the Catholic Church and was forced to flee from Nuremberg due to the threat of persecution. Jonas spent the remainder of his life in various Protestant strongholds, continuing to advocate for religious reform and peace among the fractured Protestant movement.
