EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolour painting depicts Leptospermum squarrosum, commonly known as the Pink Tea Tree, created by the acclaimed botanical artist Fred Polydore Nodder in the late 18th century. The original outline drawing for this masterpiece was made during Captain James Cook's historic first voyage across the Pacific Ocean, between 1768 and 1771, by Sydney Parkinson. The Pink Tea Tree is a beautiful flowering plant belonging to the Myrtaceae family, which also includes Camellia sinensis, the plant used to produce tea. This eudicot, angiosperm, and member of the magnoliophyta group, is native to Australia and New Zealand. Its scientific name, Leptospermum squarrosum, refers to its small, leptospermum flowers and squarrose, or square-stemmed, leaves. The Pink Tea Tree is an essential part of the Ericales order, within the Myrtales family, and is classified under the Eurosid and Asterid superorders. It is a significant member of the Camellieae tribe, which also includes Camellia thea, the tea plant, and Malvidae, the mallow family. Fred Polydore Nodder's exquisite watercolour illustration captures the Pink Tea Tree's delicate pink flowers in full bloom, showcasing their intricate details and vibrant colouration. The painting is a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the 18th century, providing valuable insights into the natural world and the remarkable discoveries made during Captain James Cook's groundbreaking voyage.
