John, 1st Viscount O'Neill of Shanes Castle (1740-98) is depicted in this stunning oil painting by Francis Wheatley, created around 1780. The Viscount, dressed in the robes of his rank, sits confidently in an ornate chair, his gaze fixed on the viewer with a serious expression. The richly textured fabric of his robe, adorned with intricate gold embroidery, contrasts beautifully with the dark background, drawing the eye to the subject. John O'Neill was a prominent figure in Irish politics during the late 18th century. He was the eldest son of the Earl of Tyrconnell and succeeded to the title of Viscount O'Neill of Shanes Castle upon the death of his father in 1774. O'Neill was a member of the Irish House of Commons and served as Lord Lieutenant of County Antrim from 1782 until his death in 1798. Wheatley, a renowned English portrait painter, expertly captures the essence of O'Neill's authority and dignity in this painting.
