EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie Elisabeth of France, born on December 23, 1764, was the eldest sister of King Louis XVI of France. Daughter of Louis, Dauphin of France, and Marie Josepe of Saxony, Marie Elisabeth was raised in the French Court and was known for her beauty and grace. In this handcoloured lithograph from "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob in Paris in 1852, Marie Elisabeth is depicted in a elegant and refined costume of the late 18th century. Her dress is made of a rich, deep blue fabric, adorned with intricate gold embroidery and lace. The high waistline and full skirt are typical of the Rococo style popular during the reign of Louis XV and Louis XVI. Marie Elisabeth's hair is styled in the latest fashion, with loose curls framing her face and piled high on top of her head. She wears a delicate necklace and earrings, adding to her regal and sophisticated appearance. Marie Elisabeth's life was marked by tragedy. She married Prince Charles of Austria in 1785, but the marriage was unhappy, and they were eventually separated. After the French Revolution, she was arrested and imprisoned in the Temple Prison in Paris. She was later released and went into exile with her family. Marie Elisabeth died on May 10, 1794, at the age of 30, leaving behind a tragic legacy as a member of the royal family during one of the most tumultuous periods in French history.
