EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Elagabalus, also known as Heliogabalus, who ruled from 218 to 222 AD. Elagabalus was the third youngest Roman Emperor in history, ascending the throne at the tender age of 13 or 14. He was born in Emesa, Syria, and his reign was marked by religious and political upheaval. Elagabalus is shown here wearing the imperial diadem and a flowing toga, with a laurel wreath resting on his head. The background is adorned with symbols of power, including a globe and an orb surmounted by a cross, signifying his role as both emperor and high priest of the sun god Elagabalus, whose cult he had introduced from his hometown. The portrait is a copperplate engraving from Abraham Bogaert's De Roomsche Monarchy, published in Utrecht in 1697. Bogaert's work was a significant contribution to the study of Roman history and art during the 17th century. The meticulous detail and lifelike quality of the engraving provide a striking representation of Elagabalus, whose reign was a departure from the traditional Roman imperial model. Elagabalus is often compared to other controversial Roman emperors, such as Caligula and Nero, due to his unconventional behavior and religious reforms. He was assassinated at the age of 18, and his successor, Alexander Severus, reversed many of his policies. Despite his short and tumultuous reign, Elagabalus remains an intriguing figure in Roman history, and this portrait offers a glimpse into the complexities of his rule.
