1810 Barras Enemy Francois Jacobin Napoleon Revolutionary Vicomte

EDITORS COMMENTS
Paul Francois Vicomte Barras: A Pivotal Figure in the French Revolution and Napoleon's Enemy (circa 1810) Paul Francois Vicomte Barras (1755-1829) was a prominent French Revolutionary and Jacobin leader who later became an implacable enemy of Napoleon I. This image captures Barras in his later years, as a post-revolutionary statesman. Barras began his political career as a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1789, where he advocated for the abolition of feudalism and the establishment of a constitutional monarchy. He rose to prominence during the Reign of Terror, serving as the President of the Committee of Public Safety under Robespierre. However, after Robespierre's fall from power, Barras played a key role in the Thermidorian Reaction, which led to the end of the Reign of Terror and the rise of the Directory. Despite his role in the Revolution, Barras's political allegiances were not fixed. In the late 1790s, he became a critic of the radical Jacobins and allied himself with the more moderate elements in French politics. When Napoleon Bonaparte seized power in the Coup of 18 Brumaire in 1799, Barras was among those who opposed him. Barras's opposition to Napoleon led to his exile, but he returned to France after Napoleon's defeat in 1814. In the post-Napoleonic era, Barras served as the President of the Council of State under King Louis XVIII. He died in Paris in 1829, having played a significant role in the political upheavals of the French Revolution and its aftermath. This photograph of Paul Francois Vicomte Barras, taken circa 1810, captures a man who was a pivotal figure in the French Revolution and a formidable adversary of Napoleon I. Despite his controversial past, Barras's legacy as a statesman and political figure remains an important chapter in the history of France.
