Pedro de Alvarado: The Brave Conquistador of Guatemala and Mexico This striking print captures the intense and determined gaze of Pedro de Alvarado, a Spanish soldier and conquistador who played a pivotal role in the Spanish conquest of Guatemala and Mexico in the early 16th century. Born around 1485 in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, Alvarado embarked on his first voyage to the Americas in 1511, under the command of Hernán Cortés. Alvarado quickly distinguished himself as a brave and capable leader, and was appointed as the governor of Guatemala in 1527. During his tenure, he led several military expeditions against indigenous peoples in the region, including the Mayans and the Aztecs. One of his most notable victories was the conquest of the Mayan city of Teculután, which he achieved through a combination of military force and diplomacy. In 1535, Alvarado was appointed as the governor of New Spain's western provinces, which included Mexico. He continued his military campaigns against the indigenous peoples, but also worked to establish Spanish settlements and promote Christianity. However, his harsh treatment of the indigenous population led to widespread resistance and rebellion, culminating in the uprising led by the Aztec warrior woman, La Malinche, in 1540. Despite his military successes, Alvarado's brutal tactics and disregard for indigenous rights ultimately led to his downfall. He was assassinated by a group of Aztec warriors in 1541, near the modern-day city of Oaxaca. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and often violent history of the Spanish conquest of the Americas, and the legacy of Pedro de Alvarado as a controversial figure in that history.
