Beechcraft

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the historic moment as the first Beechcraft 17R Staggerwing, registration number 499N, takes to the sky for its inaugural flight. The Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing, also known as the "Dreamland Dazzler," is a legendary aircraft renowned for its distinctive design and impressive performance. Designed and manufactured by Beech Aircraft Corporation in the late 1930s, the Staggerwing was a groundbreaking aircraft that combined advanced aerodynamics, elegant styling, and exceptional handling. Its unique "staggered" wing design, with the upper wing set further back than the lower wing, provided superior lift and enhanced stability, making it a favorite among private pilots and aviation enthusiasts. The 17R Staggerwing, specifically, was an upgraded version of the original Model 17, featuring a more powerful engine, improved cockpit layout, and other refinements that further enhanced its performance and appeal. In this photograph, we see the sleek, streamlined aircraft soaring above the landscape, its wings outstretched and gleaming in the sunlight. The first flight of the 499N Staggerwing took place on March 23, 1938, at Beech Field in Wichita, Kansas. Piloted by Beech test pilot Ted Smith, the aircraft performed flawlessly during the test flight, setting the stage for a new era of private aviation and cementing the Staggerwing's place in aviation history. This photograph captures a moment of innovation, beauty, and excitement as the first Staggerwing takes to the skies, leaving a lasting impression on all who bear witness to its majesty.
