Hawk Johannesburg Miles Portsmouth Speed Takes 1936
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, we see Flying Officer A.E. Clouston of the Royal Air Force (RAF) taking off from Portsmouth Airfield in his Miles M2U Hawk Speed Six aircraft, registration number G-ADOD, in preparation for the Portsmouth to Johannesburg Air Race on 28 September 1936. The race, which was a significant event in the history of long-distance aviation, attracted pilots and aircraft from around the world. Clouston's Hawk Speed Six, a two-seat biplane designed by Miles Aircraft Limited, was a fast and agile machine, capable of reaching speeds of up to 180 miles per hour. The aircraft was powered by a Rolls-Royce Kestrel engine, which provided the horsepower needed to cover the long distance between Portsmouth and Johannesburg. The photograph captures the moment of take-off, with Clouston focusing intently on the runway as he applies power to the engine and the Hawk Speed Six begins to gather speed. The propeller blades churn up the ground, sending clouds of dust and debris into the air, while the wings create a shockwave as they slice through the air. The sky above is clear and blue, with the sun casting long shadows on the runway. Clouston's participation in the race was a testament to the courage and skill of the RAF pilots of the time. The Portsmouth to Johannesburg Air Race was a grueling challenge, with long hours in the cockpit, harsh weather conditions, and the ever-present danger of mechanical failure or navigational error. Despite these challenges, Clouston and his fellow pilots pushed themselves and their aircraft to the limit, demonstrating the incredible potential of aviation technology and the human spirit of adventure. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, capturing a moment of history in the making. It is a reminder of the excitement and adventure that surrounded aviation in the 1930s, and the remarkable achievements of the pilots and aircraft that made it possible.
