Havilland Hippomenes Opened Qantas Regular 1929 December Longreach

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the last of the Qantas-built DH50Js, registration VH-ULG and nicknamed Hippomenes, standing proudly at Longreach Airport in August 1929. The de Havilland DH50J was an essential part of the early history of Qantas (Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services), an Australian airline that began as a small flying service in outback Queensland. The DH50J, affectionately known as 'Hippomenes,' was one of several de Havilland DH50s that Qantas used for both passenger and freight services during the late 1920s and early 1930s. These versatile biplanes were built under license by Qantas in Longreach, making them a symbol of the company's ingenuity and resourcefulness. In December 1934, Hippomenes and another DH50J, DH61, played a crucial role in the opening of the first regular Australia-England air service. Due to a temporary grounding of DH86 aircraft, these two DH50Js were pressed into service, flying the Brisbane-Darwin sector. This historic flight marked a significant milestone in aviation history, demonstrating the resilience and adaptability of Qantas and its aircraft during the early days of long-distance air travel. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the pioneering spirit that defined Qantas and the aviation industry during the interwar period. The last of the Qantas-built DH50Js, Hippomenes, stands as a testament to the determination and innovation that enabled Australia to connect with the world through the air.
