1835 1894 Baron Bowen Christopher Judge Synge Vanity

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, sourced from Mary Evans Prints Online, showcases The Rt. Hon. Sir C.S.C. Bowen, an English judge of great renown during the late Victorian era. Born on March 16, 1835, in London, Bowen's legal career began in earnest when he was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1858. He quickly made a name for himself as a skilled and tenacious advocate, and was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1874. In 1881, Bowen's impressive legal prowess caught the attention of the Prime Minister, William Gladstone, who appointed him Solicitor General for England and Wales. In 1885, Bowen was further honored with the title of Baron Bowen and was appointed Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, a position he held until his death on March 23, 1894. This photograph, taken during the height of Bowen's career, captures the distinguished judge in his regal attire, complete with wig and robes. The subtle hint of a mischievous smile on his face, however, belies the serious and intelligent mind beneath. Bowen was known for his keen intellect and his ability to deliver eloquent and persuasive arguments in the courtroom. Despite his impressive legal accomplishments, Bowen's career was not without controversy. In 1887, he was embroiled in a high-profile case involving the spy Alfred Dreyfus. Bowen's handling of the case was criticized by some, but his unwavering commitment to the rule of law and the pursuit of justice remained a guiding principle throughout his career. This photograph is a testament to the complex and fascinating history of the legal profession in Victorian England, and serves as a reminder of the important role that judges play in shaping our society and upholding the rule of law.
