EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a unique moment in Liverpool's road safety campaign during Christmas. As part of the city's "Keep Death off the Roads" initiative, a low loader is seen touring the streets with a severely damaged car on board, serving as a powerful reminder of the consequences of reckless driving. To give this important campaign a memorable send-off, three remarkable women gathered for an unconventional toast captured in this image. In their elegant attire and radiant smiles, we see Miss Gaynor Lacey, the National Dairy Queen at 20 years old; Miss Marilyn Pope, crowned as the National Railway Queen of British Rail at just 18 years old; and Miss Ida Bailey, known as Miss Littlewood at 24 years old. These beauty queens and personality girl came together to wish success upon Liverpool's road safety campaign by raising their glasses filled not with champagne but milk – symbolizing purity and innocence. Taken in December 1969 amidst the vibrant fashion trends of that era, this photograph showcases not only these inspiring women but also highlights society's collective effort towards promoting safer roads. It serves as a timeless reminder that even seemingly unrelated industries like dairy and railways can unite for such vital causes. Preserved through Memory Lane Prints from Mirrorpix archives, this image beautifully encapsulates both fashion history and social responsibility while reminding us all about our shared duty to keep our roads safe for everyone.
