EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of The Gibraltar Defence Force. Formed years ago, this force was established to allow young residents of the colony to actively participate in its defense. Eager recruits quickly joined, and on 12th November 1944, they made their public debut by parading through town to attend a church service at the magnificent Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned. After the solemn service concluded, the parade continued its march past the Convent residence of Governor Lieutenant General Sir Ralph Eastwood. Here, His Excellency took the salute as a gesture of respect for these brave soldiers who were ready to defend their homeland. In this particular image from that historic day, we see an instructor from the Garrison of UK troops explaining with expertise and precision how to operate a 3.7 gun's breech mechanism. This demonstration showcases not only their dedication but also their commitment towards honing their skills and mastering advanced weaponry. Transport yourself back to this pivotal era in our world's history with this remarkable photograph that encapsulates forties' military training exercises during World War Two. It serves as a powerful reminder of sacrifice, bravery, and unity as these soldiers prepared themselves for any challenges that lay ahead.
