EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in this vintage print is a remarkable scene from the early 1900s at King Edward Mine, located in South Condurrow, Camborne, Cornwall. Two dedicated miners can be seen diligently drilling underground with the aid of a dust laying spray. The Williams Lode section of the mine, which later became known as King Edward VII mine after being transferred to Camborne School of Mines in 1897, served as the backdrop for this moment frozen in time. Photographed by John Charles Burrow, an observer and chronicler of Cornish mining history, this image beautifully encapsulates the arduous nature of underground work. As these miners meticulously chip away at solid rock using their trusty rock drills, clouds of dust fill the air around them. However, thanks to the innovative use of water-based dust laying spray depicted here, some respite is provided from inhaling harmful particles. This photograph serves as a testament to both the resilience and ingenuity displayed by those who toiled beneath Cornwall's surface during its rich mining heritage. It offers us a glimpse into their challenging world while highlighting advancements made in worker safety practices. Preserved within Royal Cornwall Museum's collection, this historic print transports us back over a century ago when King Edward Mine was bustling with activity and represents an invaluable piece of local history that continues to captivate audiences today.
