Tin Bound March, Lostwithiel, Cornwall. March 1993

John Saundry (in checked shirt) accompanied by his son Tristan, and around 30 fellow marchers, proclaims a piece of land in Tanhouse Road tin bound. This meant that the boundaries were marked, preparatory to mining tin, and sets up a legal right to mine the unworked tin under a piece of waste land, on paying royalty to the owner. The land was planned to have a housing estate on it, which eventually became the case. Photographer: Jonathan Barker

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from March 1993, we witness a significant moment in Cornwall's history. John Saundry, donning a distinguished checked shirt, stands proudly alongside his son Tristan and approximately 30 fellow marchers. Together, they embark on an extraordinary journey to proclaim a piece of land in Tanhouse Road as tin bound. The act of marking the boundaries was not merely symbolic; it held great significance for future mining endeavors. By establishing these boundaries, the group secured a legal right to mine the untapped tin reserves beneath this waste land while ensuring that royalties were paid to the rightful owner. As we gaze at this remarkable image captured by photographer Jonathan Barker, our eyes are drawn to the vibrant display of Cornish flags fluttering in the wind. The rich hues of cornish tartan add an air of tradition and heritage to the scene. Surrounded by a sturdy stone wall, this united group exudes determination and resilience. Their collective efforts would eventually pave the way for progress as plans for a housing estate materialized on this very site. This photograph serves as both a testament to Cornwall's deep-rooted mining history and its people's unwavering commitment towards preserving their cultural identity and economic prosperity.
