Cloudscape on Jupiter, artwork
Cloudscape on Jupiter, artwork. The atmosphere of Jupiter, the largest planet in the Solar System, is mostly hydrogen and helium, but there are also extensive clouds of ammonia crystals as well as some water clouds. The clouds form bands in the atmosphere, and large storm systems can develop (one at right), such as the Great Red Spot. Lightning is seen at lower left. The Jovian cloud layer is about 50 kilometres thick, but some individual clouds and storms can be tens of thousands of kilometres across. Two of the Jovian moons, Io and Europa, are seen in the sky, to the left of the sunset
