EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, titled "Face and Neck Muscles" is a remarkable representation of the deep layers of muscles in the face and neck. Created in 1831 by French physician and anatomist Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery, this piece is part of an eight-volume anatomy atlas called Traite complet de l'anatomie de l'homme. The illustration provides an anterior view of the intricate musculature surrounding the eyes, mouth, chin, and other facial features. Insets within the print offer detailed depictions of specific areas such as the lips, chin, and eyes. Nicolas-Henri Jacob skillfully executed these illustrations under Bourgery's guidance. This historical artwork offers valuable insights into human anatomy during the 19th century. It serves as a testament to both medical knowledge at that time and advancements made since then. The dissected portrayal showcases normal internal structures with precision. The combination of artistic finesse and scientific accuracy makes this piece truly exceptional. Its inclusion in volume 2 further emphasizes its significance within Bourgery's comprehensive anatomy atlas. As we admire this extraordinary image from Science Photo Library's collection, we are reminded of how far medicine has come while appreciating the meticulous work done by these pioneering individuals who dedicated their lives to understanding our complex human bodies.
