Joseph Priestley, British chemist

Joseph Priestley (1733-1804), British chemist and clergyman. Best known as the discoverer of oxygen, Priestley carried out a range of research into the composition and nature of air. He was the first to recognise that respiration in animals produces carbon dioxide, whereas in plants it produces oxygen. His work on carbon dioxide led to soda water and other carbonated drinks. This engraving is based on the painting by US artist Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828). The painting dates from between 1794 and 1800. This 19th-century stipple engraving by W. Holl was made while the painting was owned by T. B. Barclay of Liverpool

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Joseph Priestley, a prominent British chemist and clergyman who made groundbreaking discoveries in the field of chemistry. Best known as the discoverer of oxygen, Priestley dedicated his life to unraveling the mysteries of air composition and nature. Through his extensive research, he was the first to recognize that animals produce carbon dioxide during respiration while plants release oxygen. The engraving is based on an exquisite painting by renowned American artist Gilbert Stuart, dating back to the late 18th or early 19th century. Created by W. Holl during this era, it beautifully captures Priestley's distinguished appearance with head and shoulders prominently displayed. As we delve into history through this monochrome artwork, we witness a middle-aged man with deep knowledge and wisdom etched onto his face. His piercing gaze meets ours directly, reflecting his commitment to scientific exploration. Beyond his contributions to science, Priestley's work on carbon dioxide paved the way for inventions like soda water and other carbonated beverages that have become integral parts of our lives today. This remarkable portrait not only celebrates Joseph Priestley's significant role as a chemist but also serves as a testament to human curiosity and ingenuity throughout history.
