Telegraph transmitter and receiver, 1914
Telegraph transmitter and receiver. This apparatus was designed by the French inventor Auguste Jean-Baptiste Tauleigne (1870-1926). At right is the relay where the message is tapped out. Headphones are at centre. At left is the recording part of the apparatus. Morse code was developed from 1836 as a means of encoding messages for transmission using telegraphy. The dots and dashes could be printed onto a strip of paper, as seen here. Photograph published in La Telegraphie Sans Fil (Wireless Telegraphy, 1914), by the French geophysicist Alphonse Berget (1860-1934)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant piece of technological history - a Telegraph transmitter and receiver from 1914. Designed by the brilliant French inventor Auguste Jean-Baptiste Tauleigne, this apparatus revolutionized communication during its time. The intricate details of the machine are visible in this monochrome print, showcasing the relay where messages were tapped out on the right side, while headphones rest at the center for listening to incoming transmissions. At left, we see the recording part of the apparatus, which allowed Morse code messages to be printed onto a strip of paper. Morse code itself had been developed since 1836 as an ingenious method for encoding messages transmitted through telegraphy. This particular photograph was published in Alphonse Berget's book "La Telegraphie Sans Fil" (Wireless Telegraphy) in 1914. Transporting us back to early 20th-century France, this image highlights both the ingenuity and historical significance of telecommunication technology. It serves as a reminder that even amidst rapid advancements in modern communication systems today, it is essential to appreciate and acknowledge those pioneering inventions that laid down foundations for our current interconnected world.
