The Giant Geyser, 1872. Creator: W. J. Linton
The Giant Geyser, 1872. Geothermal feature in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA.... a tremendous geyser, which has been called the Giant. It throws a column of water the size of the opening to the measured altitude of one hundred and thirty feet, and continues the display for an hour and a half. The amount of water discharged was immense, about equal in quantity to that in the river, the volume of which, during the eruption, was doubled. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Giant Geyser, 1872" in all its natural splendor. Created by W. J. Linton, this geothermal feature is located in the breathtaking Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. The Giant Geyser lives up to its name as it erupts with tremendous force and beauty. As described in the caption from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" this geyser shoots a colossal column of water that matches the size of its opening and reaches an astounding altitude of one hundred and thirty feet. What makes this spectacle even more awe-inspiring is that it continues for an impressive hour and a half. The sheer volume of water discharged during each eruption is immense, comparable to that found in nearby rivers. In fact, during these eruptions, the river's volume doubles due to the massive amount of water expelled by The Giant Geyser. W. J. Linton's artistic eye captures not only the grandeur of this natural wonder but also highlights its significance within American landscapes during the 19th century. This engraving beautifully depicts steam rising from hot springs surrounding The Giant Geyser while showcasing lush honeysuckle plants adding a touch of tranquility to this powerful scene. "The Giant Geyser" remains a popular tourist attraction today, drawing visitors from around the world who are captivated by nature's raw power and beauty on display at Yellowstone National Park.
