Damascus, Syria - Ancient Walls and the Bab Sharqi Gate
Damascus, Syria - (left) Ancient Wall - connected (in some way) to the flight of Saint Paul, forced to flee the city under the cover of night after explosive reactions from Jews opposed to his teachings. He was lowered down from a window in the wall (this one perhaps?), in a basket, aided by his disciples. (right) The Bab Sharqi (The Eastern Gate), also known as the Gate of the Sun, is one of the eight ancient city gates of Damascus, Syria, and the only original Roman gate still standing. Date: circa 1910s

EDITORS COMMENTS
Damascus, the ancient city of Syria, is a living testament to the rich history and cultural diversity that has shaped the Middle East for centuries. In this photograph from the 1910s, two iconic landmarks of Damascus stand proudly: the ancient walls and the Bab Sharqi Gate, also known as the Eastern Gate or the Gate of the Sun. The ancient walls, seen on the left side of the image, hold a significant connection to the biblical story of Saint Paul's escape from the city. Forced to flee Damascus under the cover of night due to violent reactions from Jews opposed to his teachings, Saint Paul was lowered down from a window in the walls, in a basket, with the help of his disciples. Although the exact window from which he escaped is unknown, this section of the walls remains a powerful symbol of the city's storied past. On the right side of the image, the Bab Sharqi Gate, one of the eight ancient city gates of Damascus, proudly stands as the only original Roman gate still surviving. Dating back to the 1st century AD, this magnificent gate, adorned with intricate carvings and inscriptions, is a testament to the city's Roman heritage. Known as the Gate of the Sun, it is a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of Damascus' enduring history and resilience. The ancient walls and the Bab Sharqi Gate, two remarkable relics of Damascus' past, continue to captivate visitors and inspire awe with their timeless beauty and historical significance.
