EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, King Gustav VI of Sweden and his second wife, formerly Princess Louise of Battenberg, Lady Louise Mountbatten, are seen being entertained by the Mountbattens at a grand banquet held at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich in 1955. The Earl Mountbatten, who is Queen Louise's brother, and his Countess are also present, along with the Rt. Hon. J.P.L. Thomas, First Lord of the Admiralty. The King of Sweden, born in 1882, was a highly respected monarch known for his diplomatic skills and commitment to modernizing Sweden. His second wife, Lady Louise Mountbatten, was the granddaughter of Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine. She was also the aunt of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who would later marry Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. The Mountbattens, Earl and Countess, were prominent members of the British royal family. Earl Louis Mountbatten, born in 1900, served as the last Viceroy of India before its independence in 1947 and was assassinated by the Irish Republican Army in 1979. His wife, Edwina, was a celebrated socialite and philanthropist, known for her humanitarian work and support of various charities. The banquet at the Royal Naval College was likely a formal occasion to honor the Swedish royal visit to the United Kingdom. The elegant setting, with its ornate decorations and grand tables, adds to the regal atmosphere of the event. The guests, dressed in their finest attire, engage in animated conversation, creating an air of sophistication and camaraderie. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of the royal families of Sweden and the United Kingdom, and the close relationships that existed between them during the mid-20th century. The Mountbattens' hospitality and the King and Queen of Sweden's gracious acceptance of it, make for a captivating image that continues to intrigue and inspire.
