Mars Spirit rover
Mars Spirit rover. Computer illustration of the Spirit rover on the surface of Mars. This is one of two identical rovers sent to Mars in 2003. It is designed to study the history of the Martian climate and to search for evidence of ancient water. It will study the composition and formation of soil and rocks. It has a panoramic camera on the white pole at upper centre which will allow interesting areas to be chosen for study. It will travel up to 100 metres in each Martian day (sol; 24 hours 37 minutes). It is hoped it will operate for over 90 sols. Spirit landed successfully on Mars in January 2004

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Mars Spirit rover, a remarkable computer illustration of the rover on the enigmatic surface of Mars. Launched in 2003 alongside its identical twin, this groundbreaking mission aimed to unravel the mysteries surrounding Martian climate and uncover evidence of ancient water. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the Spirit rover was designed to meticulously study soil composition, rock formation, and capture panoramic images using its state-of-the-art camera mounted on a white pole at the upper center. With an impressive daily travel capacity of up to 100 meters within each Martian day (sol), lasting approximately 24 hours and 37 minutes, this resilient explorer embarked on a quest for knowledge that spanned over 90 sols. In January 2004, it successfully landed on Mars under NASA's watchful eye. The intricate artistry depicted in this illustration not only highlights humanity's insatiable thirst for exploration but also serves as a testament to our unwavering commitment to unraveling the secrets hidden within our neighboring planet. This image is a reminder of how scientific curiosity transcends boundaries and propels us towards new frontiers in geology, astronomy, and planetary science. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring artwork from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of mankind's relentless pursuit of understanding our place in the universe while marveling at the sheer beauty that lies beyond Earth's horizon.
