Comet of 684 (Halley), 1493
Comet of 684 (Halley), 1493. The English astronomer, Edmond Halley (1656-1742) was the first to suggest that appearances of bright comets every 76 years were in fact sightings of the same comet. Halley predicted it would return in 1758. The comet duly reappeared as he had said it would, albeit long after his death, and is named in his honour. From Liber chronicarum mundi (Nuremberg Chronicle) by Hartmann Schedel. (Nuremberg, 1493)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 15th century, showcasing a woodcut illustration of the famous Comet of 684 (Halley) as depicted in the Nuremberg Chronicle by Hartmann Schedel. The image portrays a celestial phenomenon that has intrigued humanity for centuries. In this historic artwork, we witness the visionary insight of English astronomer Edmond Halley, who first proposed that recurring sightings of bright comets every 76 years were actually observations of the same comet. This groundbreaking theory led him to predict its return in 1758, an event that would later be named after him. The intricate details captured in this monochrome print highlight not only the artistic skill but also our fascination with natural phenomena. The tail of Halley's Comet gracefully stretches across the night sky, symbolizing both wonder and mystery. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece, we are reminded of how scientific discoveries can transcend time and connect generations. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and our relentless pursuit of knowledge about our universe. Let this print serve as a reminder that even centuries ago, individuals like Edmond Halley dared to challenge conventional wisdom and unlock secrets hidden within the cosmos.
