Lovers parting, page from a book of fables, c. 1590-95. Creator: Unknown
Lovers parting, page from a book of fables, c. 1590-95. The lovers have met in a remote wilderness location, away from the city shown in the distance. However, their affair has run its course, and they decide to part ways, each walking in opposite directions through an ominous landscape, where strange rock formations and an oversized serpent-slain by foxes gnawing on its innards-lend a sense of foreboding. As Mughal court painting developed into the last decades of the 16th century, artists began using increasingly muted colours and gentler shading techniques than they did in the more robust Adventures of Hamza at the left. The omission of a light source and shadows adds to a timeless, otherworldly impression to the landscape

Lovers Parting - A Tale of Love and Farewell in a Mysterious Landscape
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photo print, dating back to the late 16th century, depicts a poignant scene from a book of fables. The lovers, having met clandestinely in the remote wilderness far away from civilization, have reached the end of their passionate affair. As they bid each other farewell, they embark on separate paths that lead them through an eerie and foreboding landscape. The artist skillfully portrays this melancholic moment by using muted colors and gentle shading techniques. The absence of a discernible light source or shadows adds to the timeless and otherworldly atmosphere surrounding these star-crossed lovers. The backdrop is adorned with peculiar rock formations that seem to whisper secrets of ancient times. In addition, an oversized serpent lies slain by foxes gnawing at its innards—an unsettling symbol that hints at impending danger or perhaps the consequences of forbidden love. On closer inspection, delicate Persian calligraphy can be found on both sides of this remarkable artwork—six lines verso and recto—adding depth and cultural richness to its historical significance. Preserved within the collection of The Cleveland Museum of Art, this exquisite piece remains as enigmatic as its creator—a testament to the enduring power of art across centuries. Its beauty invites us to reflect upon themes such as love's transience, human emotions against nature's backdrop, and our eternal quest for connection amidst life's uncertainties.
