EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Plee Sr. after an original illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases four fascinating marine species: the Atlantic pomfret (Brama brama), deep-bodied mojarra (Gerres erythrourus), three-striped whiptail (Pentapodus trivittatus), and a Sparus sp. or red mullet (not depicted in this image). The Atlantic pomfret, also known as the deep-bodied mojarra or castagnole queue rouge, is a flatfish with a deep, compressed body and large pectoral fins. The deep-bodied mojarra is a tropical fish found in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The deep-bodied mojarra is depicted alongside the three-striped whiptail, a small, slender fish with distinctive vertical stripes and a long, whip-like tail. The three-striped whiptail, also known as the trivittatus or red-tailed whiptail, is a common reef fish found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The third species, Gerres erythrourus, is a large, deep-bodied fish with a silver-gray back and white underbelly. It is commonly known as the Atlantic pomfret or red-spotted pomfret due to the red spots on its sides. This fish is a popular food source in various parts of the world, including the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the Indian Ocean. The fourth species, Sparus sp., is a red mullet, a common name for several species of fish in the Mullidae family. The red mullet is a popular food fish in the Mediterranean and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Its elongated, slender body and distinctive dorsal fin are clearly visible in this engraving. This stunning engraving is taken from Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published in Paris in 1825. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the hand-colored engraving provide a captivating glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the marine world during the early 19th century.
