EDITORS COMMENTS
The Pergamon Altar, a grand masterpiece of Hellenistic art, stands as a testament to the cultural brilliance of ancient Pergamon in Asia Minor. Commissioned by Eumenes II Soter around 164-156 BC, this colossal marble and limestone structure was created by the skilled artists of the Pergamon school. The altar's most renowned feature is its intricately carved friezes, with the south frieze depicting the epic battle between the gods and the Titans, known as the Gigantomachy. In this scene, two prominent figures come to life. On the left, Aether, the god of the upper air and personification of the ethereal light, engages in a fierce battle with a lion-headed giant. His divine power is evident as he holds a thunderbolt in one hand and a torch in the other, representing the contrasting elements of lightning and fire. On the right, Uranus, the deity of the sky and the heavens, is shown in a dynamic struggle with another giant. His wings spread wide, he uses his trident to defend against the giant's attack. This scene is a remarkable representation of the mythological battle between the gods and the Titans, symbolizing the triumph of order and divine power over chaos. The Pergamon Altar, now housed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany, is a breathtaking reminder of the rich artistic heritage of the ancient world. Its intricate details and powerful imagery continue to captivate and inspire viewers, offering a glimpse into the mythological age and the divine beings that shaped the ancient Greek and Roman pantheon.
