Hubble Space Telescope view of nebula NGC 604
Nebula in galaxy M33. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image showing clouds of gas in the nebula NGC 604. This nebula is a region of intensive star formation. At the centre are more than 200 hot stars, each 15 to 60 times more massive than our Sun. High energy (ultraviolet) light from these stars heat the gas of the nebula and make it fluoresce. NGC 604 is about 1, 500 light years across, making it a peculiarly large nebula. It is situated in a galaxy called M33, found about 2.7 million light years away in the direction of the constellation Triangulum. This image was made on 17 January 1995

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of nebula NGC 604, as captured by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Located within the galaxy M33, approximately 2.7 million light years away in the constellation Triangulum, this expansive nebula spans an astonishing distance of about 1,500 light years. NGC 604 is a hotbed of intense star formation, with over 200 massive stars at its core. These stellar giants are between 15 and 60 times more massive than our Sun and emit high-energy ultraviolet light that heats up the surrounding gas clouds within the nebula. As a result, these gases fluoresce brilliantly under their influence. The intricate details revealed in this image offer a glimpse into the fascinating process of star birth and stellar formation occurring within NGC 604. The HST's post-repair capabilities allow for stunning clarity and precision in capturing such celestial wonders. Taken on January 17th, 1995, this photograph serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our vast universe. Science Photo Library presents this awe-inspiring image to inspire curiosity and wonderment about cosmology and evolution among enthusiasts of science and astronomy alike.
