2-8-0 locomotives under construction in AE shop, 1943
In this image, War Department 2-8-0 locomotives are shown under construction in AE shop at Swindon Works in May 1943. In order to meet the demand for locomotives for war work, the War Department placed an order in 1942 for the GWR to build 80 LMS 8F Class Stanier 2-8-0 freight locomotives, for use both at home and overseas. The short supply of raw materials meant that the building of these locomotives took longer than expected, and this image shows a number of the first batch of 27 engines under construction, over a year after the first order was placed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the heart of World War II, where the relentless demand for locomotives drove innovation and determination. In this image, we are transported to the AE shop at Swindon Works in May 1943, witnessing a pivotal moment in history. The focus of this snapshot is on the construction of 2-8-0 locomotives commissioned by the War Department. With raw materials scarce due to wartime constraints, these powerful machines were taking longer than anticipated to come to life. This particular batch captured here represents a significant milestone as it showcases some of the first 27 engines being meticulously crafted over a year after initial orders were placed. The collaboration between the Great Western Railway (GWR) and London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) resulted in an impressive fleet known as LMS 8F Class Stanier freight locomotives. These robust workhorses were not only intended for domestic use but also destined for overseas operations during war efforts. As we delve into this photograph's historical significance, we can't help but appreciate the dedication and ingenuity that went into constructing these vital transportation tools amidst challenging circumstances. It serves as a poignant reminder of how industries rallied together during times of adversity, ensuring that essential supplies reached their destinations efficiently. Step into STEAM Museum's collection and allow your imagination to wander through this remarkable era when railways played an instrumental role in shaping our world's destiny.
