Napoleon in His Study, c1800, (1896)
Napoleon in His Study, c1800, (1896). Napoleon I Bonaparte (1769-1821), Emperor of France from 1804. Napoleon enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army. In 1799 he led a coup to overthrow the government, the Directory, and became first consul and effective dictator of France. In 1804, he declared himself Emperor, and embarked on a series of military campaigns across Europe, the Napoleonic Wars. Victories such as Austerlitz and Jena led to France establishing its power across much of the continent. In 1812, however, Napoleon embarked on a disastrous invasion of Russia and defeat at Leipzig in 1813 led to his abdication and exile to Elba. He ecaped in 1815, raised another army, but was finally defeated by Wellington at Waterloo, and exiled again to the remote island of St Helena where he died. Typogravure after the painting made c1820-1856 by Paul Hippolyte Delaroche. From Life of Napoleon Bonaparte, Volume III, by William Milligan Sloane. [The Century Co. New York, 1896]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print of "Napoleon in His Study, c1800" offers a glimpse into the world of one of history's most influential figures. In this image, we see Napoleon I Bonaparte, Emperor of France from 1804, engrossed in his thoughts within the confines of his study. The photograph beautifully captures the essence of Napoleon's character and ambition. Known for his meteoric rise through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army, Napoleon seized power by overthrowing the government in 1799 and became France's first consul. His subsequent declaration as Emperor marked a turning point in European history. Through a series of military campaigns known as the Napoleonic Wars, he expanded French influence across much of Europe with remarkable victories at Austerlitz and Jena. However, Napoleon's fortunes took a turn when he embarked on an ill-fated invasion of Russia in 1812. Defeat at Leipzig led to his abdication and exile to Elba. Undeterred by setbacks, he escaped exile in 1815 but was ultimately defeated by Wellington at Waterloo. This particular print is based on Paul Hippolyte Delaroche's painting created between 1820-1856 and is featured in William Milligan Sloane’s "Life of Napoleon Bonaparte". It serves as a powerful reminder not only of Napoleon's grandeur but also his ultimate downfall on St Helena where he spent his final days. Through this photograph print, we are transported back to an era that shaped Europe forever – an era dominated by one man whose ambitions knew no bounds.
