Battle of Cape Matapan
Having been discovered by British searchlights, the Italian fleet was approached by Royal navy ships Barham, Warspite and Valiant under cover of darkness. The Italian vessels were not equipped with radar. Here, a salvo from the Warspite smashes home. Within minutes, two Italian heavy cruisers, Fiume and Zara, had been sunk. Date: 28 March 1941
