EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Georg Wolfgang Knorr in 1771, showcases a cross-section view of various intriguing cephalopods, including several species of Nautilus and Argonauta. At the center lies the Chambered Nautilus, Nautilus pompilius, with its distinctive spiral shell and chambers. To the left, we find the smaller Nautilus pompilius, also known as Nautilus crassus, which shares many similarities with the larger Nautilus but is more compact in size. Adjacent to the smaller Nautilus is the Suluensis Nautilus pompilius, a variant with a more elongated and slender body. The first Argonauta, to the right of the Nautilus, is the Argonauta argo with a narrow keel, which is easily distinguishable by its flattened body and narrow, crescent-shaped wing. The second Argonauta, located at the far right, is the Argonauta argo with a broad keel, which features a more rounded body and broader wings. These fascinating creatures, with their unique anatomy and captivating appearance, have long intrigued scientists and naturalists alike, making this engraving a valuable addition to any zoological collection.
